The Scepter

The scepter has survived antiquity as a symbol of strength and authority. Among the early Greeks, the scepter was used by judges, military leaders, priests and others. According to Greek mythology, it was used by Zeus, the father of Olympus, as the symbol of delegated authority to his heralds, the forerunners of modern diplomacy. Its use as a symbol of delegated authority to legates has apparently survived in the marshal’s baton. Early Roman coins depicted the allegorical figure of “Security” holding a scepter. During the Roman Empire, the Sceptrum Augusti, used by the emperors, was often tipped with a golden eagle.
